How to Prepare Your Home Before the Decoration Team Arrives

Here's a secret from the setup side of the doorbell: when a decoration takes two and a half hours instead of ninety minutes, the extra hour usually wasn't spent on balloons. It went into moving a sofa, waiting for someone to find an extension cord, hunting for parking, and taking down eleven photo frames one hook at a time. None of that needs a professional. All of it happens before we ring the bell — if you know the list. So here it is, the exact prep our teams wish every home did. Total time: about ten minutes.

1. Clear the decoration wall completely

The single biggest time-saver. Whichever wall you've chosen (usually the one behind the cake table), take down everything — photo frames, wall clock, mirror, that calendar from the insurance company. Nails and hooks can stay; hanging things can't, because tape, frames and balloon clusters need flat, uninterrupted wall.

While you're at it, wipe the wall with a dry cloth if it's dusty. Tape holds beautifully on clean paint and gives up early on dusty paint — and a balloon wall is only as reliable as its tape.

2. Move the furniture before, not during

The setup zone needs roughly 3–4 feet of clear floor in front of the wall — space for a ladder, the inflator, and a decorator walking backwards while eyeballing symmetry. Slide the sofa and dining chairs out of that strip in advance. Teams will happily help shift things, but every ten minutes of furniture Tetris is ten minutes not spent on the actual decoration.

3. Free up one plug point near the wall

The electric inflator is the sound of a modern balloon setup, and it needs power within reach of the work area. One free socket near the decoration wall — or an extension board kept ready — is all it takes. The number of homes where this becomes a fifteen-minute expedition would surprise you.

4. Decide the layout answers before arrival

The team will ask three questions within two minutes of entering: Which wall? Where's the cake table going? Anything you don't want touched? Have answers ready — ideally decided with whoever else has opinions, before the doorbell and not as a family debate during setup. If you've seen a reference photo you love, keep it open on your phone; one picture beats five minutes of describing.

5. Brief the gate, the lift and the parking

Three thirty-second messages that save half an hour:

• Security gate: "A decoration team is coming at 4, flat 1203" — visitor logging happens instantly instead of via intercom round-trips.
• Lift: if your building restricts service lifts at certain hours, check — frames and balloon bags climbing eight floors by stairs adds real time.
• Parking: a two-wheeler or small van needs somewhere to stand. If visitor parking is a lottery in your society, say so while booking and suggest the workaround.

6. Manage the pets and the toddlers

Said with love: a curious toddler and a balloon inflator are a slapstick film waiting to happen, and dogs have strong opinions about strangers carrying large bags. Plan for both to be in another room (or on a walk) during the setup window. It's safer for them, faster for the team, and less stressful for you. Popped-balloon fragments during setup get cleared as the team goes — but with under-threes around, mention it so extra care is taken; small balloon pieces are a genuine choking hazard.

7. Do the cleaning before, not after

Counterintuitive but true: sweep and mop before the setup. Once a balloon wall, table skirt and fairy lights are up, nobody's moving furniture to mop under it for days. The post-party cleanup is mostly cake crumbs; the pre-party mop is the real one.

8. Mention the wall's history if it has one

Professional teams use low-tack tape and glue dots that release clean from sound paint. But very old paint, flaking patches and fresh POP work can shed with any tape at all. If your wall has a past, say so — the team will test a corner first or route the setup onto stands and frames instead of the wall itself. Thirty seconds of honesty beats a touch-up job later.

9. Keep the phone loud for one hour

The team calls when they're near the gate, at the gate, and outside the door. Each unanswered call is five idle minutes. Party mornings are chaotic — but whoever booked keeps the ringer on until the doorbell rings, and hands over a number that answers if they'll be in the shower.
