A few years ago, every Agra anniversary had the same look - genda phool garlands, a brass urli on the table, maybe a rangoli at the door. That still works for traditional functions, but for surprises, birthdays, and small home celebrations, balloons have basically taken over. There is a reason for that.
For one, you can shoot a balloon arch on any phone and it photographs well. Marigolds in low light look brown. Balloons hold their colour. Half the value of any modern decoration is what it looks like on Instagram the next morning, and balloons just win that round.
Two, balloons fit small rooms. The average flat in Tajnagri Phase 2 or Avas Vikas does not have an open hall the way a kothi in Dayal Bagh does. You need a setup that works in a 12 by 14 feet bedroom, against a single wall. A balloon backdrop does that. A floral installation needs space and lighting most flats do not have.
Three, balloons travel light, which sounds like a small thing until you have seen a decorator try to climb the staircase of a Belanganj building with no lift, carrying a 6 feet pre-made marigold panel. A balloon decorator carries a deflated bag and a pump. They do the work upstairs.

Surprise setups are the single most-booked thing we do in Agra. The format is the same almost every time. The birthday person leaves the house for an hour, the decorator gets keys from a sister or building guard or watchman, the setup happens in 75 to 120 minutes, a confirmation photo lands on your phone, and the decorator is gone before the lift door opens downstairs.
What goes into the standard surprise package is a balloon backdrop wall behind the cake table, foil number balloons for the age, a name banner with the person's name spelled in alphabet foils, fairy light strings either on the wall or draped, and rose petals if it is a spouse birthday rather than a kid's.
We have learned a few things doing these in Agra specifically. Older buildings in Shahganj and Rawatpara sometimes have low ceilings and the standard 7 feet arch has to come down to 6.5 feet. Kids' birthdays in Agra are a bigger deal than they are in most metros, partly because extended family is still local and the guest count tends to balloon to 30 or 40 even for a four-year-old. A standard balloon arch does not cut it. Parents want a theme.
The themes that move volume here are not always the ones that trend on Pinterest. Cocomelon dominates the one-year-old segment - probably because every toddler in Agra is watching it on YouTube. Baby Shark is still strong for ages two to three despite the song being five years old now. Anniversaries in this city are weighted slightly differently. Agra is where couples come from across India for their honeymoon, so when people who actually live here are doing an anniversary, there is a quiet expectation that the gesture should match the place.
The most-booked anniversary setup is a balloon wall in red and white or red and gold, with foil number letters showing the year (the 25th and 50th get booked the most, with 1st and 10th close behind), printed photo strings spanning the years of the relationship, fairy light curtains, and a cake table with rose petals scattered around it. First night decoration is a real category here, especially through the November to February wedding season. The suhagraat-specific setup we do most often is a heart-shaped balloon canopy over the bed, rose petals scattered across the floor and bedsheet, a foil letter backdrop with the couple's names, and candles either on the bedside or in a path leading to the bed.
The proposal decoration format is similar but pulled forward in time. Balloon arch at the entrance, candle path, a printed message wall asking the question, and the partner walking into all of it for the first time. We have done these in living rooms, on hotel terraces, and in one memorable case on a farmhouse roof in Sikandra at 11 PM with the family pretending nothing was happening downstairs.

This is one category where Agra still does things properly. The full sequence - godh bharai, then home-coming after delivery, then mundan, then namkaran, then annaprashan - still happens with extended family present, sometimes 40 or 50 people for a single function.
